Deliver us from drivel

IT takes a leap of faith to reboot a film that bombed at the box office but Left Behind - based on a Christian novel and movie series of the same name about a biblical prophecy and its aftermath - will require divine intervention for it to fare any better than the original. The film, which begins poorly and gets worse from there, is a disaster movie in so many more ways than one.

The earlier end-of-days film was released in 2000 and spawned two direct-to-video sequels. The latest big screen version of Left Behind, directed by Vic Armstrong and written by Paul Lalonde and John Patus, is crippled by a ludicrous script, weak storytelling, poor production values and - despite the presence of veteran action star (and Oscar-winner) Nicolas Cage - cringe-worthy acting.

The movie's faith-based aspirations and biblical credentials are declared within minutes of the opening scene, but non-believers cannot hope to be delivered from this kind of drivel. Instead, viewers will be tempted to dwell on a particular Old Testament story: Exodus.
