Heritage Hangout

Tanjong Pagar is a thriving hip dining enclave, but way before it achieved its cool status, it was a gathering place for a mixed community including Chinese coolies and Indian Muslim traders. The shophouses housed small businesses and opium and gambling dens. In the late 1980s, Tanjong Pagar was selected by the URA as the first district for conservation. As part of the annual Architectural Heritage Season, the URA Conservation Department is organising a day out at Tanjong Pagar. There will be pop-up installations, free guided tours of key buildings such as the former St Andrew's Mission Hospital for Women and Children (pictured), a farmers' market and a movie screening under the stars on Bukit Pasoh Road. Participants should also stop by Tea Chapter on 9 Neil Road, which was the first shophouse to be conserved, and set the stage for the preservation of other shophouses.
Day Out at Tanjong Pagar is on Nov 23. See uradayout2019.eventbrite.sg for list of events
