Tanjong Pagar is a thriving hip dining enclave, but way before it achieved its cool status, it was a gathering place for a mixed community including Chinese coolies and Indian Muslim traders. The shophouses housed small businesses and opium and gambling dens. In the late 1980s, Tanjong Pagar was selected by the URA as the first district for conservation.
