CAREFUL team selection, a good rotation of players, and meticulous preparation – these were among the vital ingredients that helped propel Team Boss to a convincing triumph at this year’s The Business Times (BT) Corporate Golf League presented by Singapore Pools.

This was the first time the team have emerged champions, after two previous runner-up finishes.

Team Boss were the runaway leaders at the competition’s four legs – the second leg at Tanah Merah Country Club could not be completed due to heavy rain – with a total of 325 points, 11 ahead of second-placed Team Centurion.

The final point tally was calculated from three legs on the modified Stableford points system.

At the final leg, held at Laguna National Golf Resort Club’s challenging Classic course last Friday (Apr 14), Team Boss amassed 108 points from the trio of Andre Huber (38 points), Steven Lam and Terence Yong (both 35 points). This was enough to keep them at the top of the leaderboard.

The strong showing from the consistent Huber also meant he was named the Best Player of the Round on countback.

After the big win, Lam, the managing director for South-east Asia and travel retail in Asia-Pacific of Hugo Boss, said: “We had great team spirit, with the players always supporting one another. Our victory was also due to captain Terence – the captain of Singapore Island Country Club’s B Division – selecting the right players for the different courses.”

The players from Team Boss trained hard before the competition began in February, and familiarised themselves with the four venues by holding practice sessions before each of the legs, said Lam.

In the fourth leg, Team Boss withstood a stiff challenge by Team Centurion, with the latter fielding two former Singapore professionals, Lam Chih Bing and Lam Zhi Qun.

The former contributed 36 points, while the latter amassed 38 points (both revised from their 41 Stableford points). Helped by Stanley Gan’s 32 points, Team Centurion collected 106 points for the leg and an overall score of 314.

Audi Sport, the automotive partner of the BT Corporate Golf League, finished an impressive third, buoyed by Jeff Goh’s 36 points.

Andrew Romanis of the Olam Agri Team was named the Best Social Golfer with 37 points. His fabulous round helped his team clinch the Best Social Team award with 104 points. Naveen Sharma added 34 points while Dan Cho chipped in with 33 points.

BT editor Chen Huifen, who presented the main awards on stage alongside Singapore Pools chief executive officer Lam Chee Weng, thanked all the sponsors and golfers for making this year’s competition an eventful one.
