Singapore has one of the highest rates of childhood myopia in the world; some 83 per cent of young adults are myopic. At the other end of the spectrum, cataract continues to be the major cause of visual impairment among the elderly. A 2017 study titled Prevalence, Risk Factors, and Impact of Undiagnosed Visually Significant Cataract: The Singapore Epidemiology of Eye Diseases Study showed that 68 per cent of respondents with visually significant cataract were not aware of their condition.
