Fascinating sampling of Grands Crus
Gevrey-Chambertin is the favourite commune for many.
SO which is your favourite commune in the Cote d'Or? It depends on your taste or preferences. For most people, "power" is the criterion - as in power by way of sheer size, weight and dominating personality. That is why Chateau Latour in Bordeaux is my favourite First Growth, although I know that others would pick Chateau Lafite Rothschild. And similarly the commune of Gevrey-Chambertin is the favourite commune for many because of the weight and power of its wines, epitomised by the Grands Crus Chambertin and Chambertin Clos de Beze. In particular, these two Grands Crus from Domaine Armand Rousseau, acknowledged as the finest grower in Gevrey-Chambertin. Dinner a few evenings ago provided a good opportunity to see how well both Gevrey-Chambertin and Domaine Rousseau live up to their reputations.
