Finding purpose among mountains
Hiking up big mountains, The Commons Project's Jennifer Zhu Scott finds clarity and inspiration for her work connecting humans beyond borders
THE Tibetan Plateau is surrounded by mountain ranges with some of the highest peaks in the world, including Mount Everest and K2. Growing up at the edge of the Tibetan Plateau with these peaks in close proximity, I have developed a profound love for big mountains.
On my travels, I would routinely seek out opportunities to hike, ski and simply explore a big mountain whenever one is accessible. The curtailing of travel with the pandemic, however, has made me desire the outdoors more intensely during a period of enforced social distancing and isolation in Hong Kong. As such, on top of my usual mix of spinning, yoga, Pilates and high-intensity interval training, I have added hikes to my exercise routine.
In the two years since the pandemic began, I have hiked many trails in Hong Kong: Wilson Trail, Dragon's Back, Violet Hill and the Twins, Hong Kong Trail, Tai Long Wan, Ma On Shan in the New Territories, Sunset Peak on Lantau Island, and Discovery Bay to Mui Wo among them.
