Just a few hours in Helsinki give you a taste of how much the country has to offer.

You don't think to pack a swimsuit in your backpack when you're only going to be in transit on your way to Europe. But if you have a few hours to spend in Helsinki before catching your next flight, don't leave home without it.

In less than an hour, you can be out of the airport and lounging in a hot Finnish sauna - the locals' favourite pastime. That will leave you relaxed and recharged, with a few more hours left to explore the compact city.

Helsinki has several public saunas, and one of the newest is the Allas Sea Pool. The complex will reopen soon in spring after some minor renovations, and has several saunas and swimming pools. Men and women go into separate saunas, everyone is stark naked and towels are not allowed. No one bats an eyelid.
