ALTHOUGH EASTER OR Osten in Germany is a Christian holiday, the festival also marks the arrival of spring. The Germans have a whole gamut of customs and traditions to ring in this season. Legend has it that the Easter Bunny originated in Germany, and its origin story is linked to an ancient pagan fertility festival. Edible Easter bunnies were later introduced in the 18th century.

Eggs, a symbol of birth, are part of the quintessential representations of Easter in Germany. Delicately painted eggs are used to decorate budding tree branches placed in large vases. Some of these eggs were traditionally dyed with natural materials like tea, roots, and spices.

Today, chocolate eggs and bunnies continue to be a big deal in the country. They are presented as gifts during this special occasion, or hidden around the house for fun-filled Easter egg hunts. On the Easter table, there is always a huge spread of food including fish or meat served with potatoes and spring vegetables. German families may also serve specially baked breads and classic tortes to round up their celebration.
