For more than a decade, Checkpoint Theatre has successfully nurtured many young playwrights. It launched the careers of Joel Tan, Faith Ng and Lucas Ho, among others, and staged important new works. Its latest protege is Zenda Tan, a recent graduate of National University of Singapore. Her new play Eat Duck portrays an extended Singaporean family of 12 who have gathered for a seven-day Taoist wake of the grandmother. Though all of them mourn the passing of the beloved woman, some baulk at performing the rites and rituals.

Directed by Claire Wong, Eat Duck looks at fading traditions and family relations. The cast includes Karen Tan, Hang Qian Chou, Jean Ng and Pavan J Singh.

Eat Duck plays at SOTA Studio Theatre from Aug 29 to Sep 8. Tickets from Sistic.
