JOO CHIAT has seen a steady gentrification over the past few years as F&B operators seek out interesting suburban neighbourhoods as an alternative to the expensive rents paid in premium downtown districts. But the past year, especially, has seen a steady stream of openings in the heritage shophouses that dot Joo Chiat Road and its vicinity. From Italian restaurants serving artisanal pasta or pizza to hipster nasi lemak and cafes by a chef with Michelin star credentials, food-lovers have been heading there from all parts of the city. In tomorrow’s BTLifestyle, we take a closer look at the area and discover how, beyond just diverse dining options, a new community spirit is brewing along with the single origin coffee.

In the Arts, we visit Asian Civilisation Museum’s new show on batik, which traces the history of this iconic fabric with over 100 pieces on display. In Design, see how different cultural influences lend a unique touch to the interiors of a semi-detached house. And in Dining, spice up your meal with The Coconut Club’s signature nasi lemak and more. Read all about it in tomorrow’s issue of BT.
