[SINGAPORE] After 11 years, popular patisserie Tarte by Cheryl Koh is closing both its outlets at Shaw Centre and Raffles City and will cease operations after Apr 26.

The company announced its impending closure in an Instagram post on Mar 27, thanking its supporters. Many responded with dismay and disappointment.

A spokesperson of Les Amis Group, which owns the patisserie, told The Business Times that the decision was made “after a strategic review of the current economic landscape”.

“These various factors include but are not limited to the current decline in consumer discretionary spending, which the group perceives would not improve, and could possibly be worse, in the foreseeable future.”

Koh remains pastry chef at the group’s three Michelin-starred restaurant Les Amis, a position she has held since 2013. The restaurant was 38th on the Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants 2026 list released this week.

Asked if a new concept will replace the space vacated by Tarte, the spokesperson said: “We are keeping our options open at the moment.”

The group did not disclose the number of staff affected by the closures but said that its policy “remains that we will do our utmost to provide internal employment opportunities across the group for all our staff”.

A concept under the veteran F&B player, the patisserie led by Koh was opened in 2015 at Shaw Centre. The Raffles City outlet started operating in 2020.

A Singaporean, Koh was crowned “Asia’s Best Pastry Chef” by the Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants Award in 2016.

Tarte has gone on to become a favourite among those who appreciate its artisanal tarts and other confectioneries, which are baked from scratch every morning. Known for using seasonal fruit and premium quality ingredients, it is also popular for gifting.

Koh worked part-time in Raffles Hotel’s pastry section before moving to Paris’ two Michelin-starred Lasserre, followed by the Burj Al Arab in Dubai, two Michelin-starred Don Alfonso 1890 in Macau and The Landmark Mandarin Oriental in Hong Kong.

She joined the Les Amis Group in 2011, at its Cepage restaurant in Hong Kong before returning to Singapore to become head pastry chef at Les Amis restaurant.
