READING the materials list for her sculptural assemblages is intriguing enough. One of them, for instance, is made of "female mannequin form, amber bottles, epoxy American buffalo horns, steel arm brace, Banarasi Indian wedding sari trim, Victorian replica doll head, Indian jewellery, glass magnifying dome, replica deer eye and wooden elbow bangles".

The real surprise, however, comes when you actually see Rina Banerjee's works. Usually they are exotic, irisdescent and fantastical, sometimes resembling anthropomorphic forms, sometimes just amalgams of motifs and symbols. But they are always culturally rich and a visual delight.

Banerjee, who was born in India but based in Brooklyn, is one the global art stars holding court at Gillman Barracks during the Singapore Art Week. Her solo show opens at Ota Fine Arts next Friday, in close proximity to Gilbert & George's show at Arndt and Hiroshi Senju at Sundaram Tagore Gallery.
