Creative juices never run dry for designers Patricia Urquiola and Tom Dixon
PATRICIA URQUIOLA
PATRICIA URQUIOLA LOVES a creative challenge. It allows her to free her mind, dispel any notion of conventional thinking and to simply, create. Most of all, it provides an opportunity to break the mould with a unique aesthetic for an item of furniture, a hotel interior or a retail space. That propensity for free-flowing flexibility, along with a sense of playfulness, has propelled Urquiola into the upper echelons of her profession, earning plaudits along the way.
"I'm the sort who, if I see one boundary, I focus on breaking it," says the Spain-born, Milan-based Urquiola, 56, who was in Singapore recently to launch a new sofa at SPACE Furniture. "I am an architect and a designer. As a designer you think about things in a certain way - products are a part of life - but as an architect, you create magic spaces and you're thinking not only about comfort but cultural values too."
