Eco-conscious travellers can add Anantara and AVANI Hotels & Resorts in Asia to their list of approved accommodation now that they've decided to do away with plastic straws completely, switching to bamboo versions instead.

In Northern Thailand, Anantara Golden Triangle Elephant Camp & Resort works with local artist Khamchan Yano to turn fast-growing local bamboo into straws, ensuring that they're strong enough, hygienic and re-useable. Besides being sustainable, they provide local employment as well.

The hope is that the plastic drinking straw ban will be extended to the group's properties in Australasia, Europe and the Middle East by the end of the year.
