IT IS a new car with a new name and a brand new design philosophy for a drive that is very different from other sports cars with a three-pointed star. The Mercedes-AMG GT is the second sports car after the SLS to be developed in-house by the performance division of Mercedes-Benz. Like the SLS, the GT also has a V8 engine under the hood. But unlike the SLS, the GT's eight-cylinder engine is only two-thirds the size and brand new.

Called a "modern" V8 engine by the German luxury carmaker for its much improved efficiency and emissions, it has a pair of internally mounted turbos for increased responsiveness and a race-derived dry sump (the upcoming C63 is scheduled to get this unit too but without the dry sump).

The engine is tuned for two outputs - as the GT, and the GT S with an extra 48 hp and 50 Nm, and a higher boost pressure of 0.2 bar - and mated to a seven-speed dual clutch transmission.
