Mark Wei takes his travel blogging hobby as seriously as his day job
IT'S NOT EASY to pull off a dual career with finesse, but 29-year-old Mark Wei is well on his way there. He's already a successful management consultant, citing his biggest career achievement to date as "being able to advise my clients on a nationwide pricing strategy for a global restaurant chain". Mr Wei's go-getter personality and optimism are definitely assets in the consultancy business, as he candidly admits that "it's a little bit of a struggle". He adds that it's important to see through the obstacles and ride it out to reach the final goal. Mr Wei's an influential blogger and his luxury travel blog The Shutterwhale (www.theshutterwhale.com) has a following of close to 10,000 on instagram. What's unique about Mr Wei is that his hotel reviews are mostly based on staycations in local hotels - all of which are paid for by him so you can expect honest reviews. He also updates his blogs with details such as the best air miles redemption or hotel loyalty programmes that are really useful for anyone who loves to travel in style.
AN ENTREPRENEUR I LOOK UP TO IS...Elon Musk. While most businesses are profit-driven, Elon Musk ventures into unchartered industries like space travel (SpaceX), renewable energy (Tesla) and even high speed transportation for passengers (Hyperloop) even when the chances of succeeding are not guaranteed. Success to me comes in various forms and there is nothing I respect more than a person who walks the talk.
I AM INFLUENCED BY... my parents (as cliché as it sounds). I believe most Singaporeans can relate to it because Asian parenting, where the act of achieving results is always rewarded, is a given in our society. I always strive to do things to the best of my ability and I believe that there are no shortcuts to success.
