WAY BEFORE FINGERPRINT or facial recognition, people had to flip open a mobile phone to answer a call. That phone was the Ericsson GF788 Flip Phone, launched in 1997 and was a hit for its time. But not many may know that it was designed by Singapore firm Lawton & Yeo Design. It subsequently set the precedent for mobile phone design.

The Ericsson GF788 Flip Phone is one of 300 works on show at the Fifty Years of Singapore Design exhibition. The exhibition was first launched in 2015, to mark 50 years of independence, and this second showing is a refreshed version.

The design works are gathered from the fields of Environmental Design, Fashion & Accessories, Product & Industrial Design and Visual Communications, and spread over a 50-year span.
