Mercedes-Benz's top-of-the-range car has just outdone itself. To be precise, a more powerful and even more luxurious version of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class will soon be available in Singapore, when Mercedes-Benz authorised dealer Cycle & Carriage presents the new S 580 L 4MATIC.
The ground-breaking S-Class entered the market here early this year in the form of the S 450 L 4MATIC, captivating luxury car buyers from its introduction. Discerning buyers recognised the many qualities that have made every S-Class an instant trendsetter, and a waiting list quickly formed for the new Mercedes-Benz flagship.
Those early buyers knew what to look forward to, but what the new S-Class delivered truly exceeded expectations.
Now, the powerful, six-cylinder S 450 L is about to be joined by the even more impressive S 580 L. With its twin-turbocharged, 4.0-litre engine, the S 580 L provides the added luxury of truly effortless performance. The silky, cultured V8 engine generates no less than 503 horsepower, enough to propel the stately Mercedes-Benz flagship to 100kmh in just 4.4 seconds.
Thanks to electrification from the EQ Boost system, the advanced drivetrain in the S 580 L is also a model of efficiency, with a mild hybrid set-up that stores energy from regenerative braking and uses it to assist the V8 seamlessly. To any connoisseur of cars, its engine's smooth, muscular performance and cultured voice is one of life's true pleasures. But even though it has the acceleration of a sports car - not to mention the surefootedness of the advanced 4MATIC all-wheel drive system by Mercedes-Benz - the S 580 L is, at heart, a machine crafted to pamper the human body, and thereby, further nourish the soul.
As with every S-Class creation before it, the S 580 L achieves this through an unbeatable combination of utmost luxury and cutting-edge technology.
Next-level upgrades
Numbers alone suggest how superlative the S-Class is in myriad ways. As many as 20 motors control the airflow inside the cabin to ensure the best, most comfortable distribution of cool air, for example.
The rear wheel steering system reduces the car's turning circle by up to 2 metres, allowing the largest Mercedes-Benz sedan to be as manoeuvrable as the smallest one.
If you opt for the massage chairs, 10 different massage programmes are available, as part of the Energizing Comfort package that works in concert with the ambient lighting, fragrance dispenser and climate control systems to either revitalise or soothe cabin occupants.
The headlamps are digital lights with 2.6 million pixels to illuminate the road ahead with the greatest possible precision.
The new S-Class is even impressively sustainable; more than 98kg of its components are made of resource-conserving materials, with a further 40kg made from renewable materials.
Clearly, nothing about the S 580 L is ordinary. The interior is where it feels truly special, with an unmistakable way of making every journey feel extraordinary.
Expanded in every dimension, the new S-Class is even more spacious than before, but designers have worked hard to create a lounge-like cabin, filling the space with fine materials, clean architecture, stunning lighting and amazing displays creating a rich, feel-good atmosphere inside.
Intelligence in the cabin
Taking centre stage in the cabin is the second-generation MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) system, with an ultra-sharp 12.8-inch OLED display backed by more computing power than ever.
Together with help from the intuitive voice assistant, it takes the complexity and fuss out of operating the S 580 L and removes the visual clutter of physical buttons. It's so intelligent now that it is even anticipatory. The MBUX Interior Assist uses cameras to recognise the intentions of occupants. Look over your shoulder as you reverse the car, for example, and it lowers the rear sunshade without being prompted.
Such intelligence is powered by learning algorithms and the online connection that also enables the Mercedes Me Connect suite of digital services, including online music streaming.
With the Mercedes Me app, the new S 580 L even becomes an extension of your smartphone. The app enables a host of useful features. Pre-Entry Climate Control, for instance, allows you to set the air-conditioning remotely so that the car is ready to give you immediate relief from the swelter outside when you enter.
You can also remotely lock or unlock the car, find it easily even in a vast carpark, or send your destination straight from your phone to the navigation system.
It even helps you make and keep track of servicing appointments to ensure that your S-Class is properly taken care of, and able to perform as intended for years to come. Simply put, the Mercedes Me app is all about convenience.
While the new S-Class is an amazing piece of hardware, Mercedes Me Connect is the only way to unlock and enjoy the full potential of such a highly intelligent car. And it's available exclusively with cars retailed at Cycle & Carriage.
The impending launch of the new S 580 L raises a question: Why settle for a second-best experience from elsewhere, if the car represents the very best of what Mercedes-Benz can do?
