In the spirit of pioneer artists

SINGAPORE's pioneer Nanyang artists - who came from China and settled here - made their mark in the 1950s with their paintings depicting Peranakan shophouses in the city and idyllic scenes of kampung and rural life. Even today, the Singapore of old is still the favourite topic of local artists who continue to draw only the preserved bits of Chinatown. So much so that you rarely see images of modern Singapore captured in their works.

Which is where new Chinese immigrant Wang Fei comes in. In his current exhibition, he invites people to view Singapore's contemporary landscape through his eyes and oils.

"I love to capture the tropical and immigrant flavour that is uniquely Singapore," says the 41-year-old, who paints both vintage Singapore and its modern landscape on canvas; but more of the latter, such as Marina Bay Sands.
