Ink-and-paper trove from the Shanghai School

THE influence and legacy of artist Fan Chang Tien (1907-1987) has been given more recognition in the last couple of years with a few exhibitions and even a definitive book launch. Another exhibition early in the new calender year further cements his legacy in Singapore.

The "Influence of the Shanghai School of Painting in Singapore" casts a wider net by focusing on how the Shanghai influence came about, showcasing the works of Fang's students here as well.

"The showcase will represent four generations of the art movement from the time of the 'Haipai' style's grandmaster Wu Changshuo (1844-1927), but 90 per cent of the works shown are by Singapore artists," says Samuel Chen, co-founder of the Asia Art Collective art gallery/consultancy.
