Jazz's boy wonder
Joey Alexander returns next week with his trio for the Esplanade's Mosaic Music series. Expect to hear the Balinese-born 14-year-old Grammy-nominated jazz pianist play songs off his second album Countdown, named after a John Coltrane track. The record builds on the swing and improvisational style that made the jazz wonder kid's debut My Favourite Things a critical success, while also reflecting on Alexander's maturity as an artist and confidence as a bandleader.
No mean feat for a boy who picked up jazz from his dad, and was playing for Herbie Hancock and Wynton Marsalis by the time he was eight and 11 respectively.
The Joey Alexander Trio plays at Esplanade Concert Hall on Nov 7 at 7.30pm.
