ARTIST LIM TIONG GEE, who's been painting landscapes since the 1970s, returned from a Jogjakarta trip organised by The Private Museum with fresh inspiration for new works. Using batik and rice paper, he created collages on canvas that capture the mood and spirit of the historical city.
Many of the works combine Lim's flair for landscape and figurative abstraction with the earthy colours and motifs of batik. Unusual for his style, the works also feature generous white spaces between strips of collage, which heighten the details of the subjects.
The result is a uniquely South-east Asian body of work titled Impressions Of Yogyakata now showing at The Private Museum. It represents a new development for the artist who saw his career take off after winning the UOB Painting of the Year competition in 1989.
