FORMER Everton manager Billy Bingham sat beside me at the VIP gallery of the former National Stadium at Kallang in 1974 and declared: "What a stadium, what a pitch".

And later the affable Bingham, a former Northern Irish footballer and manager, who played for the Merseyside club and later managed it from 1973 to 1977, elaborated: "English clubs must play at this stadium."
