Light my fire
Scented luxury candles have gone beyond the feel-good factor and are now objects that are part of the interior design aesthetic.
LOS ANGELES celebrity indoor cycling gym Soul Cycle has inspired one, and even the Tembusu tree - an evergreen native to Singapore - has one to call its own. And every Elle Decor-reading, Tom Dixon lamp-collecting aesthete has a couple burning in their bathrooms whenever guests pop by. A more affordable and space-saving alternative to pastel Kitchen Aid mixers or Eames lounge chairs, the designer candle has become a de rigueur decor piece, and the more artisanal and luxe it is, the better.
"Candles are like little status pieces you put on your table or cupboard at home for everyone to see," says Robert Upton, freelance creative director by day and candle coolie after hours.
"But they are beautiful candles! Have you ever been to the bathroom in someone's house to find a lit Diptyque? It makes an impression. Would you get that same impression with an Ikea candle? Maybe not."
