Little Mermaid For Our Times
Theatre writer-director Edith Podesta had a remarkable 2017. In January, she swept the M1-The Straits Times Life Theatre Awards with a work written, directed and performed by her, titled B*tch: Origin Of The Species. In August, she collaborated with Eisner-winning graphic novelist Sonny Liew for the latter's first theatrical foray titled Becoming Graphic.
Now Podesta is back with The Immortal Sole, a fresh reinterpretation of Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Mermaid. The work questions what women have gained and lost over the course of history. Like the Mermaid who had to trade her voice for a pair of legs, what have women given up to gain independence?
The Immortal Sole plays at the Esplanade Theatre Studio from Jan 19 to 20. Tickets at S$27 from Sistic.
