Making a big push for Singapore tennis
Successful hosting of the ATP 250 event in February gives hope that spectators can return to live events in greater numbers soon
WHEN Singapore's sports authorities were offered the chance to host a men's professional tennis tournament in February, they thought hard about it and decided - quickly - that they could pull it off.
Time was of the essence. There was just a month to prepare for the start of the ATP 250 indoor hard-court event, which would later be named the Singapore Tennis Open, with a prize purse of US$300,000.
The tournament, held at the OCBC Arena at the Singapore Sports Hub in Kallang from Feb 22-28, was won by Australian Alexei Popyrin after he defeated Kazakhstan's Alexander Bublik in a thrilling three-set final.
