HURL a pebble in any direction and there's a good chance you'll hit a Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) or crossover (which is better than having one hit you), now that they've somehow become ubiquitous - mine not to reason why. But if you're looking for something to buy in such a crowded corner of the car market, you may as well consider one that stands out a bit.

The new Honda HR-V certainly fits the description, although there's a certain irony to the fact that it now has no shortage of rivals. When the first one made its debut, the idea of a family wagon on stilts was so novel that the first two letters of its name stood for "hi-rider" and "revolutionary".
