Mammoth task for Pop Aye's sound editor
Dylan Tan
THE biggest star (literally) in director Kirsten Tan's debut feature Pop Aye is the titular elephant and despite not having any lines, it hoards the limelight and is a scene-stealer.
But some of that credit must go to sound designer Lim Ting Li who had the mammoth (pun intended) task of bringing it to life on the big screen.
The heartwarming road movie revolves around a middle-aged man played by veteran Thai actor-musician Thaneth Warakulnukroh and his elephant taking a trip together back to the former's childhood village from Bangkok. Filmed entirely in Thai, the movie won two prestigious awards at Sundance and the International Film Festival Rotterdam - all in the span of less than a week - earlier this year. Both Lim and Tan had previously worked together on the latter's short film Dahdi (2014).
