Mapletree-Teng Academy Scholarship now open for applications

APPLICATIONS for the Mapletree-Teng Academy Scholarship, which aims to nurture individuals who demonstrate passion for the pursuit of Chinese music and are in need of financial assistance to support their musical education are now open.

The scholarship is a holistic programme that covers a rigorous training scheme of regular assessments and individual lessons with professional instructors from The Teng Academy.

Scholars will also be involved in community outreach programmes where they will perform at homes, dialysis centres, hospitals and hospices.

This scholarship was established in 2018, and is an ongoing partnership between Mapletree Investments and The Teng Academy.

The Teng Academy is a division of The Teng Company, which is a not-for-profit Singaporean arts company.

Four applicants will be selected for a 2-year scholarship, valued at S$5,000 per year. The scholarship will cover their instrumental lessons, grading examinations and course materials for the scholars for the period.

Applicants will be assessed based on their musical talent and financial capability.

Subject to approval and availability, additional provisions such as the provision or purchase of music instruments and the opportunity to attend an overseas music exchange programme may be provided under the scholarship.

In order to qualify for the scholarship, the applicants must be either Singapore citizens or permanent residents between the ages of 7 and 21 as at Dec 31, 2022.

The applicant must have a per capita income of S$2,000 or lower, and play a Chinese instrument or an instrument found in Chinese Orchestras. Some examples of such instruments include the cello, double-bass, or western percussion instruments.

Applications will close on Feb 28, with the audition date slated for Mar 19. The shortlisting of scholars is expected to be on Mar 22, while the scholarship will commence on Apr 1.
