WALK along one covered walkway of Mapletree Business City II (MBC II) and you might encounter the arrhythmic sounds of metal hitting each other, over a softer soundscape of urban ambient sounds. Look up and you'll see a strange network of copper pipes stretch under the roof. Affixed to these pipes are 500 solenoids (electromagnets that generate a controlled magnetic field) hitting on the pipes at timed intervals, creating an aural architecture that, in some ways, complements the gleaming architecture of the business park.
The installation titled Sonic Pathway is created by Singapore's top sound artist Zulkifle Mahmod, and one of four new artworks unveiled by the business park recently. Zulkifle has shown his works around the world, but this is his biggest public installation so far.
