IN 1973, THE Kallang Roar first ripped through the former National Stadium during the all-attacking South-east Asian Peninsular Games semi-finals against South Vietnam. It would become synonymous with Singapore football, notably when Fandi Ahmad, Malek Awab and Abbas Saad led the national team to win the Malaysia Cup in 1994.
Memories like this and more add to the history of Kallang, with the same stadium hosting iconic events such as the late Michael Jackson's sold-out performances in 1993 and 1996, and Mariah Carey's in 2000. You might even remember spinning in a giant teacup at the Wonderland Amusement Park which ran from 1969 to 1988.
To go back even further, some may well remember that this was a place to watch the planes take off and land when Kallang Airport was still in operation until 1955.
