Metallica to debut immersive concert film on Apple Vision Pro
Songs from the film will also be available on Apple Music
METALLICA, one of the best-selling heavy metal bands in the world, announced plans to debut a concert film on Apple’s Vision Pro headset.
The self-titled, 26-minute film was shot this past September and will be available as a demo in Apple Store locations worldwide on Mar 14.
The concert was filmed in Mexico City and includes renditions of hit songs such as Whiplash and Enter Sandman. Apple positioned cameras within the band’s mosh pit, known to fans as the “snake pit”. Songs from the film will also be available on Apple Music.
Lars Ulrich, the group’s drummer, spoke about the project at the South by Southwest Conference in Austin on Tuesday (Mar 11) with Zane Lowe, Apple Music’s global creative director.
“It seemed like the perfect marriage to do this with you guys because of that thing about being immersive and in it,” said Ulrich. “We have always been interested in pushing the boundaries.”
Apple previously debuted concert footage from the Weeknd in November, as well as a performance from British artist Raye.
Metallica was reluctant to embrace music streaming in the early days of the business, suing song-sharing platform Napster and adding its music to Apple’s iTunes store in 2006, long after the service had been established.
At the conference, Ulrich discussed other ways the band is engaging with fans, including collaborations with Billabong surfwear, Dr Marten’s shoes and the video game Fortnite. BLOOMBERG
