Miss Julie revisited
Miss Julie, the titular protagonist of August Strindberg's 1888 play, is a strong-willed woman who ultimately meets a tragic end because of the rigid gender conventions of 19th century society. Strindberg's depiction of Julie is complex and controversial, and remains a benchmark of naturalistic characterisation.
Nine Years Theatre, arguably the most exciting Chinese theatre company in Singapore, is rewriting the play and retitling it as Pissed Julie. It asks if gender conventions have truly changed today to allow women the full expression of their desires and ambitions.
The local company is collaborating with Macau actors and designers to create a bold and original interpretation where each character is simultaneously performed by three actors on stage. The play is in Mandarin and Cantonese, with English surtitles.
