More than a hatchback
The Mercedes-Benz GLA200 may look like a buff A-Class hatch but it's actually a compact SUV. By Samuel Ee
DEPENDING on your world view, the Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class compact sport-utility vehicle can either be an entry-level SUV or a high-end hatchback. The GLA-Class is based on the same platform as the A-Class hatchback but with a high-riding body that is slightly longer (due to an extended rear end), wider and, of course, taller. But the 2,699 mm wheelbase is identical, which means that although rear legroom is unchanged in the GLA-Class cabin, the headroom - both in front and behind - is improved.
More significantly, the hip point, which refers to the height of the seat squab, is also slightly higher. This means getting in and out of the GLA-Class is a bit easier, especially if you're no longer a spring chicken.
With more buff styling than the A-Class, the GLA-Class also looks more imposing. It doesn't look substantially taller - just bigger and more macho.
