Cafe, workshops, events: BYD banks on lifestyle concept to drive the next phase of EV growth
Managed by authorised dealer Vantage Automotive, the Tampines 1 space brings the brand into a suburban mall as it seeks to build familiarity long before consumers make a purchase
As Singapore’s electric vehicle (EV) market matures, BYD is betting that the future of automotive retail lies beyond the traditional dealership.
The latest expression of that strategy is a lifestyle-focused outlet at Tampines 1, where shoppers can browse EVs, enjoy a coffee or attend community events without making a dedicated trip to Singapore’s traditional automotive belt.
Operated by BYD’s authorised distributor Vantage Automotive, the showroom is its first lifestyle-focused retail concept outside of the Leng Kee Road and Alexandra Road area.
The move also reflects a broader shift in how automakers are rethinking customer engagement as EVs become increasingly mainstream.
The strategy comes as BYD continues to strengthen its lead in Singapore’s automotive market. The automaker captured 25.2 per cent of new passenger car registrations in the first half of 2026, while EVs accounted for 62.4 per cent of all new passenger car registrations during the same period.
As EV adoption shifts from early adopters to the mass market, the challenge for carmakers is no longer simply introducing new models but building stronger consumer familiarity and brand affinity.
James Ng, managing director of BYD Singapore and president of BYD Philippines, says: “As EV adoption continues to accelerate, it is important for us to bring the BYD brand closer to where our customers live, work and spend their time.”
He adds that the Tampines 1 outlet expands the brand’s presence in the east while creating “new opportunities for customers to discover BYD’s cutting-edge technology and experience our vehicles in a convenient and welcoming environment”.
Why BYD is rethinking the retail experience
For Vantage Automotive, the Tampines 1 concept is about building brand familiarity long before customers are ready to buy.
Andrew Basham, managing director of Sime Motors, the parent company of Vantage Automotive, says: “BYD’s still a young brand. It’s only been in Singapore for five years, and it’s only been large globally for three or four years.”
Rather than expecting prospective buyers to make a dedicated trip to a dealership, he says the idea is to integrate the brand into consumers’ everyday lives.
“We want much more of a community aspect, to be in the community with the people, where all the locals are wandering through,” he says.
The strategy is reflected in the showroom’s design. Instead of rows of vehicles in a conventional retail space, visitors are greeted by a curved layout centred around a circular coffee and snack bar, with seating areas that encourage them to relax and stay awhile.
The showroom can accommodate up to three models, including the Atto 2, Seal 6 DM-i and Sealion 8 EV.
Visitors can also speak with product specialists to learn more about BYD’s EV technologies and ownership, helping them better understand electric mobility before making a purchase.
“We want to make it more inviting... to get people to come in, have a look, feel comfortable. They can have some bakery items, have a coffee, take a test drive, or just become familiar with the place,” Basham explains.
How BYD is building customer loyalty beyond the sale
Besides showcasing cars, the Tampines 1 showroom will also host curated lifestyle experiences and community engagement initiatives throughout the year.
Events include sustainability talks and EV education sessions, as well as family-friendly activities like matcha-making sessions and cake decorating workshops.
The aim is to encourage repeat visits and build long-term familiarity with the BYD brand, even among consumers who are not yet in the market for a new vehicle.
“The idea is to make them feel comfortable about BYD so that it becomes a familiar experience when they are looking to purchase their next car,” says Basham.
The showroom complements Vantage Automotive’s flagship facility at Alexandra Road, where customers can access after-sales servicing and maintenance.
Together, the Tampines 1 showroom and Alexandra Road facility offer customers a seamless ownership journey, from vehicle exploration and purchase to after-sales servicing and maintenance.
BYD by Vantage Automotive is open daily at Tampines 1, #01-04 to 07, from 10am to 10pm. Prospective owners enjoy up to $8,000 in ownership benefits, plus a chance to win up to $1,000 in shopping vouchers.
