I'VE wanted a dog badly for years now, way before the pandemic and all this lockdown business, so I like to think of myself as being ahead of the curve. Anyway, how can anyone resist the large, limpid eyes or the vacuous, worshipful affection that only a puppy can give?

Mind you, dog ownership entails non-stop care, which is just as well for me, because the only reason my wife eventually chose me over a pooch is that she wouldn't have to housetrain me.
