Off 2 a new start
BMW's sub-compact convertible gets a new number and new proportions.
NOW that it is bigger and flatter than its chunkier predecessor, BMW's smallest convertible model appears more grown up although it remains relatively compact. The new 2 Series Convertible replaces the 1 Series Convertible and looks more like a smaller 4 Series but with a classic fabric roof. It may be diminutive but the cool factor is high, especially with the soft-top giving it a softer look than the 4 Series' rigid retractable roof.
Unlike the more rounded 1 Series Convertible, the lines of the 2 Series have been stretched for a low-slung silhouette with a flat rear deck. Compared with the previous convertible, it is 72 mm longer at 4,432 mm and 26 mm wider at 1,774 mm. More importantly, the wheelbase is up 30 mm to 2,690 mm.
But perhaps the most important improvement is the newfound stiffness of this open-top model. The body's torsional rigidity has increased by 20 per cent with the best aerodynamic properties in its class.
