Wheels of fortune

The Toyota Fortuner seven-seater SUV has a new-found level of luxury.

ELEVEN years after it was first introduced, there is a new Toyota Fortuner and it is sold out until next year. Few models can achieve such a feat, even when pent-up demand from an over-extended life cycle is factored in. The Fortuner isn't exactly an inexpensive car either, even if its image is that of a rugged and basic sport-utility vehicle.

The second-generation, seven-seat SUV, however, is no longer as rudimentary as the original. This rough and tough Toyota has moved with the times and gone upmarket.

It is no longer as hulking although it is longer and wider but slightly lower. The exterior styling is less boxy, with a sleeker front end and smoother profile. But like its predecessor, the new Fortuner still has a body-on-frame construction.
