It might not be as well-known as Gintama, Ninja Scroll or Samurai X but that is precisely what gives Sword of the Stranger its cult status. Anime geeks swear by this overlooked gem because of its compelling characters and storytelling; and some say the breathtaking animation - especially during the action scenes - is worth the price of admission. Thanks to the guys behind SCUM (Society for Cult and Underground Movies), Sword of the Stranger is returning to the big screen for a one-off screening under the stars on Aug 16. The plot revolves around a ronin who is tasked with protecting a young orphan and his dog, but the job becomes complicated when a mystery assassin targets the boy.
Sword of the Stranger (M18) will be screened in Japanese with English subtitles at Chye Seng Huat Hardware (150 Tyrwhitt Road) on Aug 16 at 7.45pm. Admission is by donation (from $10). Book in advance from https://swordofthestranger.peatix.com/
