One of the highlights of the ongoing Singapore Theatre Festival is this feisty one-woman performance by Rebekah Sangeetha Dorai. Titled Building A Character, the play revolves around the beautiful and talented Dorai who stood out as an acting student in Lasalle College of the Arts. But when she graduated, she struggled to find roles on stage and screen because of her skin colour. How does an actress stay strong in the face of discrimination by casting agents and producers who only want fair-skinned actresses? The play is written by poet-playwright Ruth Tang and directed by New York-based Mei Ann Teo.

Building A Character runs till July 8. Tickets from Sistic.
