THE Man with the Iron Heart is a World War II drama about the making of a monster - a high-ranking official in Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia and major architect of the Holocaust - and his subsequent assassination by members of the Czech Resistance.
The incident took place at a time when most of continental Europe was under Nazi control and there appeared to be no hope of stemming the tide. It makes for compelling viewing not just because of its significance from a historical context, but also because it is difficult to ignore the uncomfortable modern-day parallels with the perils of right-wing extremism.
The movie traces the rise to prominence of Reinhard Heydrich, a disgraced officer in the German Navy whose fortunes turned after he married into a family with political connections.
