Netflix series 'Master of None' wins early Emmy for writing

[LOS ANGELES] Netflix Inc scored its first prize for TV writing at the prime-time Emmy Awards Sunday night when Aziz Ansari and Alan Yang won for their work on Master of None, a comedy starring Ansari as an aspiring actor.

Ansari and Yang created the show after working together on NBC's Parks and Recreation, and spent each episode exploring a different topic, from the challenges of dating in the Internet era to the experience of growing up as the child of immigrants.

The awards were handed out at the Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles and aired live on ABC in a ceremony hosted by late-night personality Jimmy Kimmel.

Netflix has spent millions over the past few months campaigning for awards in an effort to de-throne Time Warner Inc's HBO, which routinely wins the most Emmy awards and earned the most nominations of any network this year.

The Emmy awards, which coincide with the start of the new TV season in the US, help shows stand out in an increasingly crowded and fragmented marketplace.

Kimmel began the show with a series of sketches featuring former presidential nominee Jeb Bush, fellow late-night host James Corden and Veep star Julia Louis-Dreyfus.

Earlier, comedian Louie Anderson won a supporting Emmy for his role in the FX series Baskets.
