NON-PROFIT organisation Glyph raised more than S$160,000 at its fundraising event on Saturday (Aug 12).
Held in conjunction with its sixth anniversary at Tanglin Club, the Tote Board will match the funds raised dollar for dollar. This brings the total sum raised to about S$330,000.
The children’s charity aims to advance opportunities for underprivileged children and youth through initiatives such as its weekly non-academic activities, and programmes that are structured around a developmental framework.
Desmond Lee, Minister for National Development, was guest of honour at the event.
The minister, who is also the patron of Glyph, said the organisation works to support young people who come from families that are working hard but have tougher challenges in life.
He added that he was encouraged to support the group since it is run by young people “who themselves came from disadvantaged backgrounds and wanted to bless others with the gift of social mobility and autonomy to be in charge of their lives”.
Volunteer Ray Tan said: “The experience at Glyph… is not just volunteering. It is also about inculcating the right habits in children (from when they are) young. For example, they are taught to take responsibility for their actions through simple gestures such as cleaning up after themselves.”
Six years ago, the organisation was a small outfit helping around 20 children – it now supports more than 2,000 of them.
When asked about future plans, Lim Si Hui, general manager at Glyph Community, said: “The contributions will make a difference in enriching the lives of these children by bringing typically inaccessible opportunities beyond school. Next up is to focus on getting our Institution of a Public Character status.”
