SHOPPING IS THE national pastime, especially if you're a Singaporean drawn to shiny malls such as ION Orchard or the new Funan. But that's not where you will find subculture enthusiast/independent creative Shaiful Risan, even if he considers himself a shopping fanatic of sorts.

That's because the 37-year-old is more often found at the likes of Golden Mile Complex or Peninsula Shopping Centre, where he has been hanging out since his childhood.

With increasing news about older malls facing redevelopment or disappearing from Singapore's landscape, Mr Shaiful is worried that part of the country's past will forever be lost.
