TENNIS legend Billie Jean King was in her prime and playing for much more than a US$100,000 winner-take-all prize when she faced off against former Grand Slam champion and full-time male chauvinist Bobby Riggs in 1973.
King was a leading figure in the campaign for women's rights and equal prize money at a time when women were considered mere afterthoughts to their male counterparts on the pro tennis tour.
Battle Of The Sexes is a dramatic retelling of a publicity stunt that led to a paradigm shift in the sport, helping to change the perception that - in the words of tennis promoter Jack Kramer - "the men are more exciting to watch". The film, directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, and written by Simon Beaufoy, deals predictably (but not sensationally) with this tale of women's lobbers-turned-libbers.
