THE day spent with beneficiaries at OCBC Aquatic Centre reminded Low Seet Ting of the time when she was a national water polo player. She was there to train 50 beneficiaries. The event on Oct 14 was organised by OCBC for its employees, their families, and also beneficiaries from Care Corner Singapore, Ministry of Social and Family Development, and Movement for the Intellectually Disabled.

Low, who is the assistant vice-president of the learning and transformation department in OCBC, said: “Personally, I am so grateful for the opportunity to give back in such a meaningful way –  it reminds me to never stop learning like the beneficiaries.”

The programme featured not only introductory swimming, but also niche water activities, such as diving, flippa ball and artistic swimming. The participants benefited from the expertise of experienced facilitators from Singapore Aquatics and Team Singapore athletes, who were on-site to provide guidance.

Eight-year-old Erica Wong from Care Corner said: “Even though this is the first time I’m trying these sports (diving and flippa ball), the facilitators and volunteers were really kind and showed me how.

“This is my first time at the event and I hope I can come back for more.”

Through this event, OCBC hopes that individuals with disabilities and the underprivileged communities will gain access to these water activities and learn essential water skills.

Said Singapore Aquatics president Mark Chay: “The event is a good example of how a CSR (corporate social responsibility) event can be fun and still be able to contribute to the society... More importantly, it is heartwarming to see OCBC staff volunteers and our national athletes on hand to guide and coach them as well.”
