OCBC Cycle, the largest mass cycling event in Singapore, will take place over the first weekend of May in what will be its 17th edition.

Online registration opened on Friday (Feb 14) and OCBC Bank hopes to attract 7,000 riders in total, with more than a thousand sign-ups expected in the first three days alone.

In a media release, OCBC said there will be a new virtual ride for cyclists to complete a round-island journey. There are just 100 slots available for this category, and participants must complete a minimum distance of 120 km in a single attempt within a 24-hour period from May 3 to June 2.

They must submit their ride details – the date, distance and duration – recorded by a fitness tracker or workout app that was used during the ride, along with a photo of themselves and their bicycle.

The 100 km Virtual Ride, where a cyclist can complete 100 km within four separate rides, will continue to be available.

Also new this year is that all Speedway Championship categories (South-east Asia, Corporate and Club) have been combined to create an OCBC Cycle Speedway Open Championship for teams of four cyclists regardless of affiliations.

The bank said that by removing the boundaries of the previous segmented categories, including the decade-old South-east Asia Championship, cyclists will now have the opportunity to challenge themselves against the best in Singapore and beyond.

The Sportive Ride (40 km) and The Straits Times Ride (20 km) are also back, offering cyclists the opportunity to pedal on closed roads and pass landmarks such as the Benjamin Sheares Bridge, the Singapore Flyer, and Gardens by the Bay.

Twelve companies and brands are on board this year as “Friends of OCBC Cycle”, among them Decathlon, Brompton, F&N, Great Eastern and Shimano.

OCBC Bank group chief executive officer Helen Wong said that the bank has always leveraged on this annual event to promote and support cycling, both as a sport for health and fitness and a social activity for community bonding.

“With 1,300 km of cycling paths under Singapore’s Island Cycling Network Programme by 2030, we believe interest in the sport can only grow,” she said.
