At Performance Motors, golf is embedded in its DNA
Golf provides an opportunity to connect with the BMW community and strengthen relationships with customers, says managing director Lawrence Tan
THEY may not have won the trophy at this year’s The Business Times Corporate Golf League, but the team from Performance Motors Ltd (PML) certainly left a lasting impression on the annual tournament.
Not only were they the most organised team, they also stood out for their professionalism, fairness and legitimacy when it came to selecting their players.
Before the competition began in March, PML – which finished fifth overall – underwent a detailed selection process that no other team could even come close to matching.
More than 50 BMW drivers took part in a qualifying round held at Keppel Club in February, in a bid to make the shortlist to take part in the first four legs of the league.
The best four finishers were then picked to form the PML team for the fifth and final leg on May 9 that was held at Laguna National Golf Resort Club’s Masters course.
And in the spirit of friendship and camaraderie, PML also offered to be the official automotive partner and hole-in-one sponsor of the league, with a brand new BMW 5 Series car up for grabs to any golfer who managed the feat.

According to PML’s managing director Lawrence Tan, the company has always regarded golf as a way to network. They also organise an annual BMW Golf Cup International – the competition made its global debut in 1987 and the series came to Singapore in 2006.
PML, together with BMW Asia, has hosted more than 6,000 BMW owners, business partners and friends from the media industry over the last 17 years and counting.
BMW has a long history with golf that dates all the way back to 1982. The BMW Championship, BMW PGA Championship and BMW Golf Cup are three prestigious tournaments on the annual golfing calendar that cater to players of all levels.

The BMW Golf Cup is among the largest international amateur tournament series that has hosted more than 800 qualifying tournaments and over 100,000 participating players in more than 40 countries.
Over two days, BMW owners can sign up to participate in the Singapore final as social or competitive players in three categories, including one for ladies.
Amateur golfers from each participating country compete in their national finals for a chance to qualify for the BMW Golf Cup World Finals that are played on world-class courses. There are even special appearances by Major champions.
Last year, the finals were held at the famed Fancourt Resort in the city of George in South Africa.
“It was our purpose to provide an opportunity for our customers to engage with the BMW brand and with one another, said Tan.
“Golf has always been an opportunity for us to connect with the BMW community and strengthen relationships with our customers. We deeply value the friendships we have made both on and off the course through our golfing initiatives, including overseas golf trips,” he added.
In 2023, PML brought back the Performance Motors Golf Association as a platform to champion the love of golf in the car community.
On the sponsorship of the BT Corporate Golf League this year, Tan said the partnership came at a “perfect time” as PML celebrates its 45th anniversary in Singapore. Tan, an avid golfer himself, hosted business partners and guests in the social flights in all five legs.
