THE art of the con is made to look positively alluring in Focus, a film about a master of the game, his sexy protégé and their well-choreographed ability to fleece victims of large sums of money and valuables, all the while behaving like a pair of star-crossed lovers in paradise.

The film, written and directed by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, belongs to the Ocean's Eleven school of slick caper flicks: larkish, lightly humorous and wholly unrealistic. Unfortunately, underneath the movie's thin veneer of sophistication - beyond the fun locales, luxury hotel suites and designer wear - there is very little resembling quality entertainment.

After a long run as a movie star with the Midas touch, Will Smith hit a roadblock with his last film After Earth (2013): you could say he lost focus. Despite his new film's title, he doesn't seem to have recovered it yet.
