The film adaptation of Donna Tartt's Pulitzer-winning novel The Goldfinch was ravaged by critics as "dull", earning just 25 out of 100 on rottentomatoes.com. But we beg to differ. Directed by John Crowley, this handsome production starring Nicole Kidman and Ansel Elgort hews closely to the epic story of a boy who steals a Dutch master's painting from a museum and grows up to become an expert antiques dealer. Legendary cinematographer Roger Deakins beautifully captures the many worlds of The Goldfinch, from the stately homes of New York to the barren deserts of Nevada. At the heart of the story is the boy's obsession with the painting, which not anyone can fully relate to without a particular fondness for art. While the quiet, understated film was panned, its obviously select audience gave it a 73 out of 100 score.
